At Rome2rio we’re busy helping people get from A to B around the globe. With 10 million unique monthly visitors, our multi-modal travel search and booking service is one of the top online travel resources used around the world.
We are looking for a Chief Technology Officer to join our growing team in Melbourne. You will be leading a rapidly growing team of 25 engineers and be taking ownership of product direction, project strategy, and engineering culture. You will also work with the rest of the executive team on recruiting, operations, fundraising, investor relations, and industry conferences. This role represents a unique opportunity to help shape a growing, internationally recognised consumer technology business built here in Melbourne.
Your role will involve:
- Driving product improvements, ranging from high-level strategic planning down to getting involved in specifics such as new interface designs.
- Managing a high calibre engineering team and providing guidance and mentorship to team leads as well as individual contributors.
- Prioritising engineering projects with various metrics in mind: user experience, traffic, revenue, and engineering complexity.
- Assisting with operations ranging from tracking revenue, meetings with partners, staff reviews, writing blog posts, and presenting internally, to investors, and at conferences.
- Hands-on involvement in coding and technical discussions. Keep your skills up to date and maintain a deep understand of the product and underlying technology.
Who we’re looking for
We are looking for somebody with a solid software engineering background who has experience leading a team of at least 15 developers. The fundamentals are important to us; a degree in Computer Science is essential. Experience in an international consumer technology business is especially well regarded too.
You will be the key advocate for our product, focussed on Rome2rio’s users and prioritizing their needs. You will be making decisions about what projects we tackle and when, plus choosing the right people for these projects. You will make critical engineering decisions and step in to get your hands dirty when needed. You are also excited about the opportunity to get involved in a range of operational and executive decisions and in the shaping the bigger picture.
We are after somebody who is known and well-regarded by others in the technical community and will be respected by our engineering team. A “get stuff done” attitude is important to us, and you should push our developers to grow, tackle new challenges and invest in their careers. You adhere to a lean philosophy when running a team; minimize meetings, people over process, fail fast and avoid a corporate mentality. You are able to balance user experience with business metrics such as revenue and traffic.
You must be based in Melbourne.
